Benylin Original is an over-the-counter (OTC) cough syrup designed to relieve symptoms such as coughing, congestion, and nasal catarrh (mucus buildup). It offers both antitussive (cough-suppressing) and expectorant (mucus-clearing) effects.

Active Ingredients (per 5 mL dose)

• Diphenhydramine hydrochloride – 12.5 mg
  (an antihistamine with cough-suppressing and sedative properties)

• Ammonium chloride – 125 mg
  (an expectorant that helps loosen and clear mucus)

Each dose also contains:

• Alcohol – approx. 5% w/v

• Sugars – 1 g sucrose, 2.3 mL glucose

• Preservative – Sodium benzoate 0.2%

• Sweeteners like saccharin sodium and sodium cyclamate

The syrup is described as a clear, dark-brown liquid with a raspberry-like smell and taste, packaged commonly in 100 mL or 200 mL amber glass bottles.

Usage & Dosage Guidelines

• Adults: 5–10 mL every 3 to 4 hours as needed (up to 4 doses in 24 hours).

• Children (6–12 years): 5 mL every 4 hours (maximum of 4 doses daily).

Safety note: Do not exceed four doses per day.

Precautions & Side Effects

• Drowsiness & impaired concentration are common due to the antihistamine component. Avoid driving or operating machinery; effects may be worsened by alcohol or other CNS depressants.

• Storage: Keep the product in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight and out of reach of children.
